LyondellBasell Grant Helps Students

HOUSTON, June 27, 2011 – High school students are receiving a peek into industry careers and having fun this summer at San Jacinto College’s EnergyVenture Camp, thanks to a grant from LyondellBasell.
EnergyVenture camp blends fun and education to introduce middle- and high-school students to the ever-changing energy industry. During several weeklong camps held in June and July, campers learn about career opportunities in the energy field and the importance of science, math and technology.
“This camp would not be possible without the corporate support we receive from LyondellBasell and other companies,” said Linda Drobnich of San Jacinto College. “It truly is a win-win for Houston. Working together, we are helping to fill the pipeline of future workers."
A $6,000 LyondellBasell education grant is sponsoring 10 students as well as the EnergyVenture Reunion Program next February. The company also donated gifts for all 140 students in the program and furnished operations and engineering speakers. Camp participants also visited the company’s La Porte plant for a behind-the-scenes tour of science at work.
“LyondellBasell seeks to help the communities surrounding our manufacturing facilities through our ‘Fostering Success’ contributions program and employee volunteerism,” said La Porte Site Manager Courtney Ruth.
LyondellBasell has eight manufacturing plants in the Houston area including Channelview, La Porte, Pasadena, Houston and Chocolate Bayou. The facilities provide jobs for 3,700 employees and 2,000 contractors and are operated by LyondellBasell subsidiaries Equistar Chemicals, LP, Houston Refining and Lyondell Chemical Company. Locally, they produce products used by customers in foods and food service products, and the automotive, medical and construction industries.
