Frozen Food Storage Helps Neighbors in Need
CLINTON, Iowa- Oct. 29, 2018 – Volunteers at Victory Center Rescue Mission in Clinton understand the value of food donations brought into pantry. Local produce, canned foods and fresh meats are all essential items to help contribute to feeding individuals and families.
So, when a surplus of fresh meat contributions is donated to the pantry, additional freezer chests are needed to store access food items for later distribution.
Understanding Victory Center fills nearly 25 percent of the meal gap in Clinton County, Jim Hillier, site manager for the LyondellBasell Clinton Complex, said giving to organizations like Victory Center Rescue Mission is an obvious choice.
“The center has seen a significant increase in the number of families in need of food supplied by the pantry,” said Hillier. “I can think of no greater cause than to support the food pantry that provides meals to local families.”
Victory Center Rescue Mission does not accept any federal, state or city funding. Their ministries are supported through tax-deductible contributions and donations of churches and supporters.
“We reached out to LyondellBasell who provided us with a grant to purchase the freezers,” said Lyle Wilkins, Victory Center coordinator. “LyondellBasell has been helpful to us financially in the past. We are so grateful for their generosity.”
The freezers will have a major impact on those who are increasingly relying on food donations. The center distributes over 3,000 pounds of food each week, utilizing eight freezers and three refrigeration units.
“Our partnered food suppliers have the necessary food available, it is now a matter of expanding our refrigeration and freezer storage capacity,” Wilkins said.
The food pantry works with the Feeding America Network to provide 829 families food locally.
