LYB Volunteers Repair Harvey-Damaged Outdoor Classroom at the Environmental Institute of Houston

Volunteers Tackle Roof Repairs and Painting as Part of the Company’s 18th Annual LyondellBasell Global Care Day

HOUSTON, Texas – Nov. 13, 2017 – LyondellBasell’s Bayport Complex employees, families and friends spent Saturday, Nov. 11 working with the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Environmental Institute of Houston (EIH) in celebration of the company’s 18th Annual Global Care Day. More than 30 volunteers helped to rebuild and paint the institute’s outdoor classroom that was damaged during Hurricane Harvey.

The outdoor classroom, which sustained roof damage during the hurricane, was built by LyondellBasell employees last year, so the volunteers had a vested interest in making sure it remained a viable learning space for the institute’s students. Volunteers replaced the roof, built handrails for the stairs and stained the entire structure to guard it against the elements.

“For the past 18 years, LyondellBasell has been proud to extend the tradition of working across the world to impact our communities,” said Stephen Goff, LyondellBasell’s Bayport site manager. “There is a strong desire to invest in the places where we live and operate and this is one the most important days of the year. Employees help to decide the organizations that we work with and this day is a demonstration of our ambition to make a tangible difference.”

LyondellBasell has a long-standing relationship with EIH and has worked with the organization on past Global Care Day events and other environmental projects. Since 1991, the mission of the EIH at University of Houston-Clear Lake has been to advance understanding of the environment through interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach. The institute provides access to environmental information to the university and the community through activities, seminars and presentations that spotlight topics of vital importance to students, citizens, teachers and technical audiences.

“We are grateful to work with LyondellBasell during their Global Care Day event,” said George Guillen, Ph.D., executive director of EIH. “LyondellBasell consistently provides an outpouring of service. It is always nice to see a company that acknowledges the importance of philanthropy, but it is gratifying to know that each piece of this global company truly works to change their communities.”

LyondellBasell is one of the largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies in the world. Workers from 58 manufacturing sites and offices in 23 countries participate in the annual Global Care Day activities. Over the past 18 years, LyondellBasell employees and their families have cumulatively donated more than 40,000 volunteer hours during Global Care Day activities.
