Bayport Site Earns Prestigious Safety Award

LyondellBasell received recognition from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for its achievements in the area of safety. The Bayport Propylene Oxide Plant (BLO) was awarded the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Star Status (VPP). Facilities must demonstrate a system that focuses on prevention and training along with a commitment from management and involvement by the workers.
“By working together, employees and managers at BLO can be proud of achieving OSHA’s VPP Star designation,” said Mark Briggs, OSHA’s area director in the Houston South office, “This award demonstrates not only what working together can do, but shows the highest level of commitment to worker safety and health that every employer should seek to achieve.”
Briggs presented a plaque and banner to BLO Site Manager Doug Mathera. LyondellBasell CEO Jim Gallogly and other members of the senior leadership team joined a packed assembly hall of workers for the awards ceremony.
“The OSHA Star is something that isn’t given. It is something that is earned.” said BLO site Manager Doug Mathera. He thanked his VPP committee for their efforts, “These are the folks who never lost faith that we could earn the OSHA Star. They are a cross section of some of the best folks across our plant.”
Once a site receives the VPP Star designation, periodic audits will determine if the facility qualifies to retain the classification.
